Driving a car while pregnant

Modern cars are comfortable enough that even a pregnant woman can drive with ease. At the same time, both she and her future baby will feel comfortable and safe. Driving for pregnant women has several advantages:

  • The risk of catching a cold or other infections is lower than on public transport.
  • Convenience of movement.
  • Constant access to fresh air if the car’s air conditioning is regularly maintained and refilled.
  • The ability to stop and rest as needed.
  • No overcrowding, unlike public transportation.

However, there are also downsides, such as the risk of getting stuck in traffic and the constant stress of driving. Additionally, some pregnant women may have the following contraindications to driving:

  • Constant nausea (toxemia).
  • Threat of miscarriage.
  • Risk of premature birth.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Anemia.
  • Increased emotional sensitivity.

We advise pregnant women who drive to follow these recommendations:

  • If you have little driving experience, refrain from long trips in winter.
  • If you are in the later stages of pregnancy, remember that fatigue sets in quickly, so be especially cautious while driving.
  • Do not exceed 60 km/h on city roads and 90 km/h on highways.
  • Pass the lower part of the seatbelt under your belly for comfort, and consider buying a special model designed for pregnant women from an auto shop.
  • Avoid using air fresheners in the car to reduce the risk of nausea.
  • The music in the car should be calm and pleasant.
  • Adjust the driver’s seat once a week, leaving a gap of 15 cm between the steering wheel and your belly.
  • Regularly check the vehicle at a service center.
  • If the trip takes longer than an hour, make 15-minute stops to rest and stretch.

Don’t neglect these simple tips, and your driving experience will bring only positive emotions.
